“People pay for your brand and not your skill.”
This was one of the boldest statements made at the Master class which was organised by U.K. based Been there & Done that Ltd. The master class was both intimate and rewarding as the room which could only hold 30 attendees was filled to capacity. The personal and career development class was geared towards transforming lives in the areas of:
• Managing your career
• Creating a Personal Development Plan
• Branding and Projecting Yourself
• Improving Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
• Time Management
Perhaps one of the best things about the master class was how each pointer was intertwined. Good career management from the onset requires deep critical thinking, neither can function without the other. Once thinking has occurred well enough, it is required that said persons project themselves effectively to build a personal brand which in turn cannot be effective if they have not created a personal development plan. Equally, time management is a thread, where perfected, all the other key aspects follow.
Each pointer was thoroughly delved into leaving no stones unturned as the interactive session also served to give responses where the attendees were unclear. Unfortunately, if you didn’t get to attend the master class, you missed out on quite a number of major keys. Below is a quick summary of the class.
“Your career is your journey through life, learning and work.”
Understanding your key strengths and weaknesses are instrumental to managing your career because first, you have to identify your career. Mr Andrews gave several examples of how one could identify their core strengths. Some of them included speaking to family and friends, volunteering, reading articles, company websites and blogs, industry magazines; speaking to friends and colleagues in other companies, departments or roles or speaking to a career coach.
For example, if you are a planner, your ideal job role could be that of a manager effectively leading project team. That’s the dream but it isn’t your reality, how do you then get there from where you currently are? The answer, Problem solving!
So, you’ve identified where your strengths lie and identified what job role is well suited to those strengths… critical thinking is essential for the next step you will take in your career. In this stage, brainstorming is essential. Do you have mentors you can bounce ideas off of? Do you have a personal problem solving team different from your designated team at work? These are key aspects to look at!
“The more you think of complex problems, you flex your cognitive muscles.”
He then moved on to building a personal brand. On this topic, he spoke of the essence of building an online social presence. Twitter, he said was a good place for those who wanted to become thought leaders in their field as a thought leader himself in Macroeconomics who boasts some over 13,000 followers on Twitter. He however warned to stay in your lane as only topics on which a person was highly informed should one express opinion. These twitter streets do not play!
“In growing your brand, be ready to work for free”
Free labour as he explained was a lack of monetary gain but not necessarily, a lack of alternative gains. Although pecuniary gain might not be present, the exposure/experience value cannot be quantified. He was also careful to add that one had to choose very carefully how they opted to go about it as if those benefits were not derived, then it would indeed be free.
“Your phone’s calendar is your friend”
Time management was something Mr Tunji Andrews expressed was still a struggle. Well, it helped to know that the business development expert was human after all. However, he mentioned enlisting help from friends, his wife and his smart phone. To-do lists with timelines, he added were also very helpful in dealing with time management.
In the end, it was a unanimous decision that the class had been a good investment for all who attended. He ended with a few bonus tips on creating an award winning CV. “It’s the first time the employer gets to meet you, make it count”, he added. It was a great success for all present and everyone got to go home with the material used during the workshop as well as a certificate.
The next masterclass is a Microsoft Office Workshop due to hold in Lagos 22nd April, 2017 equipping all attendees with Beginners and Intermediate mastery of the Ms Office suite.
